Sherlock Holmes in the Sign of Four // Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

The second installment to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s brilliant Sherlock Holmes saga. It’s quite amazing how such a dated novel can entice such a modern thrill. There’s drama, anticipation, romance, and some moderate form of justice at the end. To deter boredom, Sherlock requires mental stimulation, which the ominous case of Sholto does more than its fair share.

There were two things that struck me: (1) the vicious villianization of “black” — people in India — and (2) Sherlock Holmes’ cocaine abuse and somewhat gracious demeanor when needed.
