Ender’s Game // Orson Scott Card.

Purely reread as a refresher for the Shadow series, this iconic work is just as sublime on the second read as on the first. Under the hood of Card’s mind, this novel explores the essential gears to nurture a military protégé: Ender Wiggins requires both empathic vulnerability to compassionately understand his enemy and vicious savagery to forcefully prioritize self over others–when it comes down to us or them, it better be us at the end. Ender never wanted to be a killer, but they needed a killer. Ender always wanted to be understood, but only he understood “them”–the Buggers.
